Navtech Radar Announces 5km Detection Range for Perimeter Security
Navtech Radar has announced its longest-range perimeter security sensor, extending the AdvanceGuard system's detection radius to 5 kilometres — covering approximately 79 square kilometres per sensor unit.
The extended range targets applications where detection distances measured in hundreds of metres are insufficient: marine approaches, border zones, military installations, and large-area critical infrastructure. The system operates in all weather conditions including total darkness, fog, snow, and dust, using Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar technology that is unaffected by the visual obscurants that degrade camera-based detection.
At 5 km range, a single AdvanceGuard sensor covers an area that would require dozens of thermal cameras or hundreds of fence sensors to monitor — a cost comparison that favours radar for wide-area surveillance where detection (rather than classification) is the primary requirement. Classification at range typically requires pairing the radar with thermal or visible cameras for visual verification of tracked targets.
Navtech positions the extended range for airport runway and apron monitoring, where detecting unauthorised vehicles or personnel at distances exceeding camera coverage is a safety-critical requirement. The AdvanceGuard system is already deployed at airports, military facilities, and critical infrastructure sites globally.
Navtech Radar, based in Wantage, Oxfordshire, UK, manufactures FMCW radar for security, airport ground surveillance, and industrial automation applications.
